MSU Study Away Internships

James Madison College, in partnership with the College of Social Science, offers Study Away Internship opportunities for undergraduate students in Washington D.C., New York City, Detroit, and Flint. These domestic internships allow students to build career-related work experience in a field of their choice while earning academic credit for learning, living, and working in a new environment. Students pay a program fee that covers housing and related expenses, as well as tuition for the specific number of credits for which they enroll. These programs fulfill the JMC Field Experience requirement. For additional information, please contact the JMC Field Experience Coordinator and see the links below:

JMC Congressional Internship Program - APPLICATION

Location: Washington, D.C. (Capitol Hill)

SUMMER 2024: May 11 – August 3, 2024 (Program runs every Fall, Spring, and Summer.)

The Madison in Washington Internship Program is focused on providing students with a National Capital Region based academic and professional development experience focused on legislative and public affairs. In addition, this program places an emphasis on increasing diversity among students who participate in DC-based internship experiences. Students will be placed into a Summer 2024 internship with Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin's Office (D-MI 8th District). This is an exciting opportunity for students interested in diversity & inclusion and public affairs!

  • Dates: Housing is available Saturday, May 11 – Saturday, August 3, 2024 (NOTE: these dates may change due to housing availability and office need). The 12-week internship will take place within that timeframe. Travel arrangements to and from Washington, DC will be made by the student.
  • Housing: JMC will arrange housing through a DC-based housing partner on Capitol Hill within walking distance of the internship. The college will cover the cost of housing for students, so students do not pay for housing. For students on SPAD or similar programs, housing will be covered in part by the college and part by SPAD support.
  • Compensation: This internship is PAID (amount TBD). The office will provide compensation for student interns consistent with the pay policies for relevant congressional office or other host organizations. Students will cover additional (out-of-pocket) expenses like meals, transportation, spending money, and other day-to-day expenses.
  • Courses: Students are required to enroll in MC 400 & MC 401 (Field Experience courses) for 12 credits. Participants cover the cost of tuition for MC 400 & MC 401 (additional scholarships are available to help with tuition costs).

This opportunity is open to two (2) JMC students who are able to demonstrate a commitment to professional development, increasing diversity in public affairs, and offer a clear sense of how the program might enable them to help reach personal career-related goals. All JMC majors are welcome to apply (junior/senior status preferred).
