Andrew Knapp, Alumnus
Andrew Knapp joined HHS on July 2, 2001 as the Acting Director and Deputy Director for Operations, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs. In December of that year, he assumed the role of Counselor to the Secretary and in February of 2003, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff. In this role, he advises the Secretary daily from a portfolio that includes the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Administration on Aging (AoA), the Indian Health Service (IHS), the Office of the Surgeon General, the Office of Public Health Emergency Preparedness (Homeland Security), the Secretary's Rural Initiative, as well as number of other topics.
Prior to appointment at HHS, he was a government affairs consultant, assisting business and trade groups with issues pertaining to the nation's governors, state legislators and statewide elected officials. Andy also served at the Republican Governors Association as the Political Director, the Deputy Finance Director and as a Policy Analyst.
In addition, Andy worked in the State Government Affairs division of Consumers Energy Corporation in Lansing, Michigan. He has been part of the election effort of President George W. Bush and the re-election efforts of Governor John Engler of Michigan, Congressman John Porter of Illinois and Bush/Quayle '92.
Andy was a double major in Spanish. He is a native of Illinois and grew up in Libertyville.
