Professor

Professor Schechter's teaching and research interests include international law, human rights, natural resource sustainability, global governance, U.S. foreign policy and globalization. He received a 1978 Michigan State University Teacher-Scholar Award, the 1986 Outstanding Faculty Award from MSU's Senior Class Council, a 1990 State of Michigan Teaching Excellence Award, the 1997 MSU Alumni Club of Michigan Quality in Undergraduate Teaching Award, the 2001 Michigan State University Honors College Award for Distinguished Service to Honors Students, and a 2001 Michigan State University Distinguished Faculty Award. His book publications include, the Historical Dictionary of International Organizations (1998), Innovation in Multilateralism (1999); Future Multilateralism: The Political and Social Framework (1999); The Revival of Civil Society: Global and Comparative Perspectives (1999); Rethinking Globalization(s): From Corporate Transnationalism to Local Interventions (2000), United Nations-sponsored World Conferences: Focus on Implementation and Follow-up (2001), The Political Economy of a Plural World: Power, Morals and Civilizations (2002), United Nations Global Conferences (2005), Globalization: Effects on Fisheries (2007) and, International Governance of Fisheries Ecosystems: Learning from the Past, Finding Solutions for the Future (2008), He is currently working on the second edition of the Historical Dictionary of International Organizations. He has served as a consultant in internationalizing the curricula in colleges and universities across the United States and is a past president of the International Studies Association, Midwest Region..

Michael Schechter published "Working to Eliminate Human Rights Abuses of Children: A Cross-National Comparative Study" in Human Rights Quarterly (Volume 30: August, 2008) with Michael Bochenek. 

 Michael Schechter, with Nancy Leonard and William Taylor, edited International Governance of Fisheries Ecosystems:  Learning from the Past, Finding Solutions for the Future (American Fisheries Society, 2008). 

Globalization: Effects on Fisheries Resources, edited by William W. Taylor, Michael G. Schechter and Lois G. Wolfson was published by Cambridge University Press in October 2007.  It contains an introduction, "Globalization and fisheries: a necessarily interdisciplinary inquiry," co-authored by Madison alumnus John Rood (IR/PTCD ’05)) and Michael Schechter and a chapter, "Great Lakes fisheries as a bellwether of global governance," co-authored by Madison alumnus Grant Folland (IR ’04)) and Michael SchechterWilliam Taylor is an adjunct member of the Madison faculty, chair of Fisheries and Wildlife and University Distinguished Professor. Michael Schechter published an article entitled "Fisheries" in the Encyclopedia of Globalization, edited by Roland Robertson and Jan Aart Scholte (New York: Routledge, 2006). 

Michael Schechter will be presenting a paper entitled "Global Governance of Fisheries Ecosystems" at the annual meeting of the American Fisheries Society in Lake Placid, New York in September. The paper is jointly authored by Nancy Leonard, and will also be the lead chapter in a book entitled "International Governance of Fisheries Ecosystems: Learning from the Past, Finding Solutions for the Future," that Leonard and Schechter are editing with Bill Taylor. Leonard is a Fisheries and Wildlife Ph.D. student at MSU, and she also works for the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission. Schechter is a member of her committee. The American Fisheries Society will publish the book in 2007.

Professors Schechter and Zierler published "Multilateralism: Does its Still Matter" in the Fall 2005 Information Memorandum published by The Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS).

Professor Schechter presented a paper, "From Fisheries Development to Fisheries and Development, A Case of International Organization Learning" at the International Studies Association-South meetings in Miami on November 4, 2005. While there, he also chaired and served as a discussant on a panel entitled "Governance Across Levels".

Michael G. Schechter delivered a paper entitled: “MDGs: An Answer to the UN Global Conferences or More of the Same?” at the annual meeting of the Academic Council on the United Nations System in Ottawa in June, 2005.

Michael G. Schechter published "Possibilities for Preventive Diplomacy, Early Warning and Global Monitoring in the Post-Cold War Era; or, the Limits to Global Structural Change," in Adapting the United Nations to a Postmodern Era , 2 nd edition, edited by W. Andy Knight (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005). 

Professor Schechter presented a paper, " Anatomy of Influence Revisited: Insights from United Nation-Sponsored Global Conferences," at the Annual Meeting of the International Studies Association (Honolulu, March 4, 2005).
